Salinas, on Ecuador's southern Pacific coast, has been my hometown for more than 3 years.  Since I relocated here from Florida with my Ecuadorian-American husband and two small children, I have been enjoying a much more relaxed lifestyle.  In fact, now I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

Salinas has long been the top beach destination for Ecuadorian travelers.  It continues to be #1 with Ecuadorians, while also drawing huge interest from foreign travelers and buyers.  Salinas has a year-round population of about 60,000.  Combined with the neighboring towns of La Libertad, Santa Elena and Ballenita, the greater Salinas area has a year round population of about 250,000.  You can take a quick virtual tour, by viewing this video: Salinas Area Video

There is good infrastructure in the Salinas area.  There are several major grocery stores, medical clinics, movie theater, a university, a shopping mall, a car dealership and a host of mom & pop businesses that cater to just about every need.  Cable TV, reliable internet service and municipal utilities are available in all homes.  While some of the side streets inside neighborhoods are sandy, all the major roads are paved and kept in good condition.

I have found Ecuadorians to be friendly, family-oriented and welcoming to visitors and foreign residents.  The official language here is Spanish.  You will find some Ecuadorians that speak English, but not all.  A smile and a few words in Spanish can go along way to helping you bridge the language gap.  Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar, so that makes it easy.

The weather on Ecuador's south coast lets you enjoy outdoor activities year round.  December through May is mostly sunny, with afternoon highs in the high 80s and nights in the 70s.  June through November is a mix of sun and clouds with afternoons in the low 80s and nights in the 60s.  The area is semi-arid, meaning it gets an average of 4 to 5 inches of rain a year, which keeps humidity and bugs in check.

Of course beach activities are extremely popular in Salinas.  Whether you like swimming, kayaking, fishing, surfing, collecting seashells or just walking, there is a beach in or near Salinas to meet your needs.  There are many restaurants serving seafood, Ecuadorian specialties, Italian, Chinese and other options.  There are several small museums.  The local mall has a movie theater.  Salinas has two yacht clubs and a country club.  The expats hold pot lucks dinners and fundraisers to support local charities.  For big city amenities, Guayaquil is 2 hours away by car.

Salinas is conviently located about two hours by car, over a nice highway, from the international airport in Guayaquil.  Taxis, buses, private car service and rental cars are available.  There is a regional airport in Salinas, which is undergoing an upgrade. Once completed it is planned that there will be regularly scheduled commercial flights into Salinas.  In the Salinas area, there is extensive bus service and taxis readily available.

Salinas has long been the primary beach resort for Ecuadorians.  That local demand remains as strong as ever and now there is growing demand from foreign buyers and renters as well.  In the Malecon, or main boardwalk area, there are many high rise condo buildings.  There are also off-beach single family homes.  In other parts of Salinas and the neighboring towns, single family homes are predominate, although you will find beachfront condos in some areas.  A foreign buyer has the same rights as an Ecuadorian, with ownership being fee simple (you own the property outright).  A property with a tax assessed value of at least $25,000 is one way in which you can qualify for a residency visa.  In some villages there is also comunal ownership, which means you do not own it outright. Should you come across a proeprty with comunal ownership, it is a good idea to discuss the pros and cons with a real estate attorney before proceeding.
